How Shun's Lifetime Sharpening Program Works

Vivront carries a selection of Shun knives and sharpens them too, so if you're shopping for your first Shun or adding to a set, you're covered from purchase through maintenance.

Shun's sharpening service is run out of Kai USA's facility in Tualatin, Oregon. To use it, here's the process as of Feb 22, 2026:

  1. Complete an online Sharpening Request Form on Shun's website. Print a copy to include in your package.
  2. Package your knives yourself. Use a box, wrap each knife individually, and add packing material so knives don't move around in transit. Shun provides packaging guidance on their site.
  3. Ship to Kai USA using a trackable carrier like USPS, UPS, or FedEx. Shipping to Tualatin is at your cost.
  4. Include the shipping and processing fee — $15 for US customers, $25 for Canada and Mexico. Payment is by check, money order, or credit card information written on the printed form.
  5. Wait for return shipping. Current estimated turnaround at the facility is 3 weeks once received. Add transit time both ways.

What the Program Covers and What It Doesn't

Shun's facility sharpens standard double-bevel knives and can repair microchips, small chips, and tips. A few things they don't do:

  • Sharpen serrated knives (they can hone them, which realigns the edge, but does not remove metal like sharpening)
  • Sharpen scissors or shears (honing only)
  • Repair handles, polish, re-etch, or replace rivets
  • Specialty sharpening techniques

If your bread knife or kitchen shears have gone genuinely dull rather than just misaligned, Shun's program won't address that.

Who Qualifies

The program applies to purchases made through Kai USA's authorized dealers in the US, Canada, or Mexico. Kai USA's site notes that knives purchased outside of authorized channels may not be eligible. If you're unsure whether your purchase qualifies, their warranty team can be reached at warrantyinfo@kai-usa.com or 1-800-325-2891.

Sharpening at Home

Shun knives are sharpened narrower than most German knives, and made from harder steel, typically in the 60–66 Rockwell range. Both of these affect how you sharpen them at home.

Pull-through sharpeners designed for Western angles will set an edge wider than Shun's original geometry. This often removes metal without improving performance on a Japanese-angle blade.

Whetstones are the right tool. A medium grit to set the edge, a fine grit to refine it, and consistent angle maintenance throughout. It's learnable, but takes practice. If you're new to freehand sharpening, practice on a less expensive knife before working on your Shun knives.

Honing between sharpenings extends the edge significantly. Shun recommends a ceramic rod or leather strop. If honing still restores the edge, you don't need to sharpen yet. When honing stops working, when the knife is tearing rather than slicing even right after honing, it's time to sharpen.

A Mail-In Alternative

If Shun's program doesn't fit your timeline or situation, Vivront's mail-in sharpening kit is another option. A pre-paid kit ships to you with packaging and return postage included. Pack your knives, drop the box at any mailbox or post office, and get them back sharp, typically within 1–2 days of us receiving them.

A few differences from Shun's program worth knowing:

  • No purchase history or ownership documentation required
  • Serrated knives sharpened (not just honed)
  • Scissors sharpened
  • Multiple brands in one kit — Shun, Wüsthof, Miyabi, or whatever else is in your drawer
