Shun Knife Sharpening Service

Your Shun knives were built for precision. Our mail-in sharpening kit gives you professional Japanese-angle sharpening, by people who understand Shun's geometry, without the paperwork, the wait, or the guesswork. Pre-paid kit ships to you. Pack your knives, drop at a mailbox, get them back sharp in about a week.

Wait, Doesn't Shun Offer Free Lifetime Sharpening?

They do. Here's what that actually involves:

  • You supply your own packaging (Shun doesn't send you anything)
  • You pay shipping to Shun
  • You pay shipping back from Shun
  • You fill out a form and mail a check or write your credit card number on paper
  • You wait ~2 weeks at the facility, plus transit both ways
  • You must be the original owner, with proof of purchase from an authorized dealer

If you bought your Shun secondhand, received it as a gift, or can't locate proof of purchase, the free program isn't available to you. And even if you qualify, the total round-trip time is often 3–6 weeks.

Some people find that worth it. Others don't. Vivront is for the ones who want their knives back in less time and with less friction.

  2. Pack your knives
Custom inner sleeves and reinforced outer packaging are included. Wrap your Shun knives, seal the box, and drop it at any mailbox or post office.
  3. Get them back sharp
We sharpen, hand-inspect, and return your knives, typically within 1-2 days of receiving them. Postage back is included.

Angle Can Matter, Especially With Thin Blades

Shun knives are sharpened at a narrower angle than German knives. They're also made from harder steel.

Take a Shun knife to a general sharpening shop or run it through a pull-through sharpener designed for German steel, and you'll likely end up with an edge that's thicker than it needs to be, too aggressive, or simply a bummer for the blade. Our technicians are trained specifically on Japanese-style geometry, matching the angle to the model and hand-inspecting each knife before return.

Which Shun Knives Do We Sharpen?

All of them. Classic, Premier, Hikari, Sora, Kanso, Blue, Dual Core, Kiritsuke, Kai Pro, if it's a Shun knife, we sharpen it. We also sharpen other brands in the same kit if you want to send multiple knives from your collection.

Never Be Without a Knife

Include a Shun Sora, Kai Pro, or Kusakichi knife when you order this kit and get $15 off. Discount applies automatically in cart when both items are present.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be the original owner?
No. We sharpen Shun knives regardless of where or when you bought them. Secondhand, gifted, or inherited... all welcome.

How often should Shun knives be sharpened?
Most home cooks who hone regularly get 1–2 sharpening sessions per year out of their Shun knives. The harder steel holds an edge well, but once honing stops restoring that edge, it's time to sharpen.

Can I sharpen Shun knives at home?
Yes, with the right equipment and technique. Shun's harder steel and narrower angle can require more advanced tooling and practice. If you're comfortable on stones, it's doable. If not, professional sharpening can protect your investment.

Can I mix Shun with other brands in one kit?
Yes. Add Wüsthof, Global, Miyabi, or any other kitchen knives to the same kit.

Is shipping really included both ways?
Yes. Your kit arrives with pre-paid postage included. You don't pay anything extra at the mailbox, and return shipping is included in your kit price.

Safe, USPS-Compliant Shipping

Your kit meets and exceeds USPS safety guidance per USPS Publication 52, Section 443. Sturdy outer packaging and cushioned inner sleeves are included, with no exterior content markings. By using the service you agree to the terms of service.
