Serrated Knife Sharpening
Serrated Knife Sharpening, We Sharpen What Most Shops Won't
Serrated knives are the blades most sharpeners turn away. The geometry is more involved, the tools are different, and most shops aren't set up for it. We are.
Vivront sharpens serrated knives, bread knives, steak knives, utility serrated blades, and Cutco serrated knives, at our shop in Edina. Drop off in person or mail in from anywhere in the US.
What Makes Serrated Knives Different
A straight blade has one continuous edge. A serrated blade has individual teeth, each with its own bevel. Sharpening each one correctly, without removing the serration pattern, but re-using it, requires different tools and skills and more time per blade.
Most pull-through sharpeners and many professional services skip serrated blades entirely, or worse, grind down the teeth until the knife is effectively straight. That's not sharpening, per se, it's serrated destruction.
We work with the existing serration geometry to reused what's there in most cases. Or to alter the pattern and re-cut teeth in a few cases. The blade comes back sharp.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can serrated knives actually be sharpened?
Yes, properly. Each serration has its own edge that can often be re-purposed or re-cut. The process takes longer than sharpening a straight blade, but the result is a knife that performs the way it did when new.
Will sharpening remove the serrations?
It can. However, in most cases, not the way we do it. We work with the existing tooth geometry rather than grinding it fully away. Your knife comes back with an edge ready to work.
Do you sharpen Cutco knives?
Yes, including Cutco's serrated knives. Drop off in Edina or mail them in. Same pricing as any other serrated blade — $17 per knife in person.
How often should serrated knives be sharpened?
Less often than straight blades because the the teeth distribute cutting force across more contact points, they typically stay functional longer. When a serrated knife starts tearing rather than cutting cleanly, it's time.
What if a tooth is damaged or broken?
Bring it in and we'll assess it. Minor damage can often be worked around. Significant damage may require a more involved restoration. We'll share with you what's possible and what it costs before we start.
